I'm surprised the 3500-watt generator wouldn't power your well pump. Back a few months AFTER the Y2K scare had passed, I bought a slightly used 1600-watt generator ("Almost new! Only started up once to test it!") to back up the power to the outside sump pump we have outside the cellar door of the house in Woburn. That door is slightly below grade, and during torrential rains (especially in the early spring when the water couldn't get through the frost-hardened ground) we'd get water pouring in under the door, ruining carpets and other stuff (the downstairs is finished). So I dug out the door landing as a dry-well, and buried a sump-barrel by the door. I thought of bringing the generator up with us, but the minivan is limited to short runs because of a jury-rig to make up for a back-ordered part for the cooling system, and the generator wouldn't fit in the PT-Cruiser with all our other stuff. I think what I'm going to work towards is to replace the electric stove with a propane one, replace the electric water heater with a propane one, and get a ~5kW propane generator to run the heaters, the pump, the fridge, and a few lights. May not happen all at once because of the cost.

--Gene

Welcome to Maine. After we were without power for 10 days in the 1996 great Ice Storm, I bought a Honda 3500 watt generator and had a Gentran switch installed in the main panel. If we lose it now, I pull the starter on the generator, plug in the Gentran and throw the switch.
You might think about a small wood stove, there is nothing like it, on a daily basis up here. No problem with no electricity. We have a dug well here, so can lift the cover and throw a pail with a rope in so that we can work the flush and have fresh water.

In pockets of the country (PA is one, Ohio is another) there are numbers of VOGTs to be found. Not so much up in my area (Boston). My VOGT history is elsewhere on the family treehouse (http://www.familytreehouse.net/genealogy/vogt.html). Right now I'm over in Germany on business and was able to gather source document copies for the VOGT line in the village of Lich.

Did you find the PA photos in the web site scrapbook?

Gene

I live near Lancaster, Pa and am also no relation to the B&B owners. Apparently, my relatives came in through Philadelphia sometime in the mid 1850's. My branch settled in Baltimore, Md. I look forward to sharing a few pictures and some history.

Thanks for the kind words. It is disappointing that VOGT.COM etc. are no longer available, but I was able to get VOGTFAMILY.COM, .NET, and .ORG, as well as GENEVOGT.COM, before they got snapped up. they all point to the FAMILYTREEHOUSE web site.

Gene
